Ask an Advisor: What Does Financial Freedom Mean to You?

When we hear “financial freedom,” it’s easy to picture a retirement commercial—someone walking on a beach, sipping something with a tiny umbrella. But the truth is, financial freedom means something different to everyone.
Whether it’s starting a business, taking care of family, or simply having more time to do what you love, it all starts with a clear definition and a solid plan.
We asked four advisors from across Skylight Financial Group’s offices to share what financial freedom looks like to their clients, and how they help them get there.
Scott Trent, RICP®, CLU® | Financial Planner – Cincinnati, OH
What does financial independence mean to your clients?
"To many of my clients, financial independence means replacing lingering stress and anxiety from financial uncertainty with clarity and confidence. It creates the privilege of presence. When they are financially secure, they can be present while spending time with friends and family, present while focusing at the office or building their business, and present while pursuing passions and hobbies. Financial independence allows them to be fully engaged in creating fulfilling experiences for themselves and the people they love most."
James Glaser | Financial Planner – Cleveland, OH
How do you help clients balance personal goals with family priorities?
“I see a lot of families struggle with the conundrum of raising young children and the cost of their many activities, while still focusing on their own financial goals. I work with my clients to build a customized plan that allows them to address both. Like budgeting funds for kids activities, while still contributing to individual retirement plans and wealth accumulation strategies. After all, balance comes from being proactive, not perfect.”
Sara Canterbury, CFP®, FSCP® | Financial Planner – Dublin, OH
What’s something people often overlook when planning for the future?
“The world tells us to save for retirement, and we spend a lot of time talking about building up our assets. What doesn’t get talked about as much is how to actually spend those assets in retirement. Understanding how the money you’re saving today turns into income down the road is important. It helps you see WHY you’re using certain strategies, and how making changes over time can either help or hurt your retirement income.”
Marc Seymour, CPWA® | Financial Planner – Toledo, OH
What’s one summer goal or opportunity you encourage clients to take advantage of?
"Summer is a great time to invest in what matters most—our families. We help clients plan for the future every day, and part of that planning is reminding them why it matters. It’s so they can feel confident and comfortable enough to focus on living. For clients with kids or grandkids, summer is one of just 18 opportunities to make memories while the pace slows and the days feel longer. It’s a perfect time to recharge and reconnect with the people who mean the most."
