Samantha Hall, Carla Hellman and Julie Boyd from Skylight Financial Group’s Cincinnati office recently, joined some friends to take part in the American Heart Association’s Mini Heart Marathon on Sunday 18 March.  The event, which is Cincinnati’s largest single-day fundraiser and hometown favorite of 40+ years, brings people together to participate in a heart-healthy exercise and raise life-saving funds to fight the number 1 and 5 killers, heart disease and stroke.

When asked why she was walking, Samantha Hall said, “I initially suggested this event to help raise awareness but also for us to get involved in a team activity and to promote healthy choices, a firm program which a lot of us have started this year.”

Samantha was introduced to the Heart Mini two years ago by her cousin’s wife.  She was six months pregnant at the time and had never participated in a race before.  She turned up at the event without really considering why she was participating.  It was only at the event that she delved into what the race was for.

“Being a part of such an overwhelming flood of positive people and seeing the variety of people racing, be it as a survivor, or for someone, they had lost or because they felt passionate about being healthy, really added to the atmosphere and drove me on to finish the line despite the rain!  I was so glad that my small contribution would further help research for cardiovascular diseases.  I, six months pregnant, left that race with the biggest smile and more energized than I had been for days!!” said Samantha.

Samantha continues, “This year’s walk was just as good. The weather was perfect for a 5k walk/race and we had a blast!  Even my now 22-month old son got to join us! Everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves and walking or running with their causes posted on signs and poster boards. We all agreed that we will be doing this next year and will do our best to get more people to join us.”
